Skimming would provide the final finish to a wall or ceiling over multiple types of background and for some properties, this is all that is needed. For properties that need more work, float and set would be required which is a base coat prior to skimming. Materials used could range from sand and cement, plasterboard and modern gypsum basecoats which I would review with you upon quotation.
An alternative to skimming and basecoats are dry lining which is referred to as tape and jointing. This provides a quick and instant smooth surface ready for decorating.
For older properties internal lime plastering is available. This is more common for period properties that are looking to maintain authentic character. This type of plastering also allows the building to breathe and so reduces damp.
